Marsha Collier's Cool eBay Tools Newsletter
The latest insider Tips & Tricks for eBay
August 2004- Vol 3 No. 8

Happy Birthday eBay!
Today is eBay's 9th birthday. Who'd have thought that what seems like a brief nine years ago, that friendly little online trading post called AuctionWeb would have grown into one of the world's largest mercantile venues. I discovered AuctionWeb in 1996, but didn't actually join until July of 1977. Those were the days. To celebrate, eBay is running a half-price auction  (visit: http://pages.ebay.com/promo/anniversary04/?ssPageName=CMDV:AB#1995) sale for only 24 hoursThey've also posted (on the page linked above) a sample page from the old AuctionWeb website that many of us grew to love.

August will be a short newsletter, because, as many of you know, eBay sales are quickly ramping up after a summer of doldrums... Marsha Collier

Ebay Current Statistics

At the end of the second quater of this year, eBay had over 114 million registered users. Have you ever been curious as to who the top sellers are? Check out the Nortica 500 at http://www.nortica.com/UserArea/ebay500_2.asp. This list is updated quarterly and lists the top eBay sellers by feedback ranking. Also, be sure to check out Novato Technology's free eBay Profit calculator. There's a link on the same page as the list.
If you'd like to know the current amount of auctions on ebay, by day, week, month or year, you can view these graphs (updated daily) from MedVed Quotetracker at http://www.medved.net/cgi-bin/cal.exe?SIND. On the left hand side of the page, there's a drop down menu that allows you to view your data by catgeory - some very useful information for you sellers!

U. S. Postal Service Delivery Confirmation Rule
Did you know that "technically" you can only put a Delivery Confirmation on a first class envelope that is 3/4" or wider? Most Post offices don't enforce the rule, but some do. To get around this issue, just put a couple of packing peanuts in your envelope to give it a little lightweight bulk.

Updated "hot" list!
The August "hot list" has been posted on the ebay site  The "What's selling on eBay?"  is answered for the current month. Watch how those figures and data change into the holiday season. Studying eBay sales trends is the best way to become a sucessful seller!  Access the August 2004 report http://pages.ebay.com/sellercentral/hotitems.pdf.

eBay Home Page Promotion calendar
New users traditionally arrive at eBay via the home page. As you know,
the home page presents some interesting promotions that draw in new buyers. Below is a chart
of the upcoming promotions. See if you can't list something in these categories so as to
benefit from this free boost. See the upcoming dates at http://pages.ebay.com/sellercentral/calendar.html.

Get Online Values

Ever wonder what an unusual item is worth? Remember, there are several "values": What does it sell for in stores? How much can you buy it for at a garage sale? and How much does it sell for on eBay? To get a general idea of value, visit the Koval's website (The famous price-guide people) and use their free online price guide at http://www.kovels.com/

Ever wonder what Pierre's doing?
Blogging, running a personal journal on the internet, has become a popular pastime. You can find out what's happening with the rich and famous (or not so rich and famous) by reading their daily blogs. I have a blog at http://mcollier.blogspot.com/, Mark Cuban of the Mavericks has a blog(http://www.blogmaverick.com) as does Scot WIngo (CEO of Channel Advisor). Guess who else does?
You can learn all about what eBay founder, Pierre Omidyar is doing at his blog. http://pierre.typepad.com/
